The Maldives from the UK: best time to go, costs and how to save
5 min read · Updated 29 June 2026 · Wayfare Travels
Overwater villas, impossibly clear lagoons and total quiet — the Maldives is the classic bucket-list escape. It has a reputation for being expensive, but with the right timing and the right island it's more attainable than you might think.
Best time to visit
The dry season runs from roughly November to April, with the most reliable sunshine and calm seas — this is peak season and prices reflect it, especially over Christmas and New Year.
May to October is the wetter season, with short tropical downpours but plenty of sunshine in between — and noticeably lower prices, which is great value if you're flexible.
Getting there from the UK
Malé (MLE) is about a 10–11 hour flight from London. Many travellers fly via a Gulf hub such as Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi, which also makes a twin-centre trip easy.
From Malé you transfer to your island by speedboat or seaplane — your resort arranges this, and we'll factor it into your quote.
How to make it more affordable
Travel in the shoulder season, choose a guesthouse island (the local islands such as Maafushi offer beaches and excursions at a fraction of resort prices), or pick a resort with a speedboat rather than seaplane transfer.
Half-board or all-inclusive can save money once you factor in how remote the islands are.
What it costs
Flight deals from the UK can start from around £899 return in quieter months. Accommodation ranges enormously, from affordable guesthouses to five-star overwater villas.
Because every island is its own resort, it pays to have someone match the island to your budget and style — that's exactly what our team does over WhatsApp.
